This month's recommended resource:

Your local public and/or college libraries!

While browsing my local library, I found an audio CD called: 100 Ways to Motivate Others:  How Great Leaders Can Produce Insane Results without Driving People Crazy by Steve Chandler, with Scott Richardson.  So far, I am finding it VERY helpful and highly recommend it!

Training Session with Alf Orpen and Ron Tracy
Alf Orpen, co-founder of ONE Group, recently completed his Organic Living Seminar tour in many cities across the globe:  from New Zealand, to Canada, the United States, Mexico, over to the United Kingdom and Japan on his way back to Australia.  Everyone who has been fortunate enough to hear Alf speak this time or on a previous visit will agree his words are simple yet extremely powerful.

Last month, I gave a summary of my notes from his seminar.  This month, as promised, I've provided some basic points made during the Representative Training held in Washington, DC.  We were fortunate to have both Alf and Ron Tracy, general manager for North America, in attendence and giving us their unique insight to success as Independent Representatives of this organic enterprise!

[Note:  It is expected that the directors will facilitate speaking tours at regular intervals, so if you were not able to make it to a seminar yet, hopefully you can join one during the 'next round' in the coming year and beyond!]

Notes from the Representative Training Session

Paraphrased from Alf Orpen's portion:
There are some fundamental reasons we come to any business.  To GROW a business, you need CLARITY about who you are and what you are about.  Most people are coming to ONE Group for altruistic reasons with earning money secondary.

If we are clear on the OUTCOMES we expect, we will get there!  How much do you want Health-wise, Financially, in Relationships...When you are going somewhere in the World, you ask directions or get a map.  It's the same idea.

Make a Decision. Set your intentions. Write them down.
INTENTION: What you think becomes reality.  Why are you pursuing a ONE Group business?  Once you say "I am going to do this and reach such-and-such goals," then that is what is going to happen.  People and events come into your life.  It creates MOMENTUM.  Alf suggests doing 1 to 3 tasks a day, which you consider the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS each day to reach your goals.

DESIGN: Put your signature on your business.  Make it fit you.  Work with an attitude of ABUNDANCE not fear.  Stay within your resources and budget, realize there is enough for you.  Begin NOW!  Not in the future.  Alf gave the example where he decided to increase his income in business with a goal of growing 40% per year, from $300 a month to $1 million dollars a year.  He chose to increase at a steady pace and reached $1 million in 12 years!

It's like planting a tree -- you plant the seeds, water them, feed the soil, it takes time for the roots to develop and the tree to grow and then give you fruit.  Focus on a solid trunk and be patient.  (Having a database for follow-up is extremely important.)  If you find yourself with a problem, one strategy is to leave it there, go around it and continue moving forward.

One challenge is becoming impatient.  If we realize impatience is the desire to have your needs met first, then we can see this is counter-intuitive to any business.  A business serves others, helps solve others' problems and is designed at its fundamental level, to help others.  If we focus on that, we will see our needs met naturally.

Ron Tracy focused on qualities that may inspire as well as cause issues for new and current representatives.  His presentation was entitled, "Hidden Reasons Reps. Leave."  He explained that if we understand processes of disengagement, we can do something about it earlier on and develop trust, hope, a sense of worth and competency (aligning talents and desires) more successfully with everyone we sponsor and within ourselves.

DESIGN:  Focus here can be on realistic expectations because some people who join have unrealistic expectations.  Ron compared starting a ONE Group business with getting a 4-year college education.  He explained that starting a direct selling business can begin to be profitable much earlier on...and the education you get is priceless!
In the first year, it's important to figure out how a rep. wants to grow their business, identifying possible strategies, educating about policies, the compensation plan, products and more. The second and third years, reps. will want to evaluate marketing strategies, change or continue on course.  By the 3rd to 4th year, you start to see fruits of your labor; AND you are not thousands of dollars in debt like with a 4-year college education, but rather starting to see solid monthly income, as long as you have been and continue to put in the effort.  The residual income starts to grow stronger and stronger.
AUTHORITY:  New representatives like to have trust and confidence in leadership and a sense of commitment.  If a sponsor is not building trust through competence, through words and actions, then some people lose this trust and confidence.
RESPONSIBILITY: People want to know: Where is the company going?  How is it going to get there?  How can I contribute?  How many hours per week can I put in to build my business?  As a sponsor, we need to focus on coaching and feedback.  People want to know how they are doing.

SUCCESS:  To reach success, one must have the drive and ability to build a business. While this can be learned, the person needs to want it and make the decision to achieve it in a 2 to 5 year plan.  Occasionally, one realizes there are challenges; for example, major life events occur that make it too much of a hardship for the individual to continue their commitment.

What Makes a Good Representative?
Empathy - know why you want to build a business; have the ability to feel even if you haven't experienced it. To imagine it.
Drive:  the need to succeed in a personal way.

What Can YOU Do to Help Your Team?
Ownership: feeling recognized for efforts and results.  Even though we have our own businesses, it is important to recognize your efforts, get feedback and know that your sponsor and team care about you.

Thanks:  Saying Thanks and let people know why you appreciate them or things they are doing; create a culture of recognition; maintain communication.
It has been said many people overestimate their potential in 9 to 12 months and underestimate what they can do in 4 years.  If we can think in more long-term perspectives, we can make better decisions on how to get there and achieve goals.
Take Initiative: learn all you can from your back-office resources.  Develop a business learning library!  CD's, Books, DVD's, free e-mails with tips and ideas, etc.
-- Maximize non-traditional work schedules -- blend not balance.
-- Build social relationships by working together.

A few suggested authors, coaches, etc.:
Brian Tracy, Jeffrey Gittomar, Robert Kiyosaki, John Di Lemme, Michael Oliver, Tim Sales (www.explorefreedom.com/hallgold).

Have you been receiving free e-mails from someone who really motivates or inspires you?  Listened to a dynamic coach lately?   Picked up a book about synthetic chemicals, skin care or other related topics?  Why not share these with us in next month's issue?  Send an e-mail to me today (or whenever you have a good nugget to add).  THANKS!!

Editor's Comments:

Building on Your Strengths.  Go from Good to GREAT!
A few helpful hints summarized from the CD-version of 100 Ways to Motivate Others:  How Great Leaders Can Produce Insane Results without Driving People Crazy by Steve Chandler, with Scott Richardson.

Make a list of 4-10 things you do well or are pretty good at.  Now, take 3 of these and think of ways you can build on these strengths and get better at them, how you could employ them successfully in your business, in motivating others, in communicating, etc.

The author of this book explained most people make a list of what they're bad at (either written or kept in their head), and focus on improving those skills or attributes.  Then we use 'victim language' such as 'should' -- I should work on my reading skills so I can read faster, even though I prefer listening to books on CD.  I should clean up and get organized.  This language is not the language of a leader.  A leader says 'I want to clean up and get organized' or 'I will clean up every day for 20 minutes each day'.  Leaders make it an action statement not a chore.  Eliminate 'should' from your vocabulary and notice how powerful that is!

So, why focus on what we don't enjoy or don't do well?  When what we need to do is figure out what we are already good at and become GREAT at it!  This makes so much sense.  If you are good at playing piano when you were young, wouldn't your parents or teachers encourage you to become even better?  Why would they switch you to singing if you aren't so good at that?  And say, you need to learn to sing since you already play the piano.  If you are a good public speaker and enjoy doing it, but are not so good at writing, would you say 'oh, I need to learn to write better so I can write a book' or would you say, 'oh, I love speaking and debating and want to do more of that'?

For example, I love to write.  I feel I am good at focusing on my audience and thinking about their needs and desires (that's how I learned to write in high school journalism!)  So, I thought, why not use that skill and enjoyment to start these monthly news bulletins for the entire team?  What a great way to stay in touch, motivate others and learn from each other too!  And if I can get even better at writing and enjoy the process, that's (organic) icing on the cake, yummy : ).

Now it's your turn.  Do the exercise above and if you want, share with us your three special or enjoyable skills you will focus on to become GREAT at and that will help you build your business!  (If you are already doing this and building on a strength, we would also like to hear from you.)

Please send your testimonials, questions, ideas, favorite books, CD's, DVD's or coaches and more by January 12th for the January edition. Thanks!
Wishing each of you and your families a fun, meaningful and peaceful holiday season!  And of course, an organic one at that : ).

To a new year filled with health, happiness, love, prosperity and fun,
Ronit
