News: Alf Orpen, co-founder of Organic & Natural Enterprise Group (aka ONE Group®), recently completed Organic Living Seminars across the US, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, the

Part of the seminar focused on synthetic chemicals, such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Sometimes you will see 'derived from coconut oil' next to this ingredient. Alf explained that this chemical is a combination of salt and sulfuric acid. To get the final product, an ethoxylating agent must be used, such as ethylene oxide; all these agents are known carcinogens (cause cancer). So, even though an ingredient may be 'derived from' coconut oil, because it must be ethoxylated to become Sodium Laureth Sufate, it has become a toxic chemical.
At a previous seminar, a participant claimed if it's from coconut oil, it must be safe. Alf dared this person to eat 2 lbs of Sodium Laureth Sulfate (derived from coconut oil), while he, Alf, would eat 2 lbs of coconut oil. Of course, the attendee declined the offer, because as a scientist, he realized this would be toxic and he would probably die from eating SLES. In contrast, Alf would certainly survive an 'overdose' of coconut oil!
Sodium Laureth Sulfate is found in over 90% of skin and personal care, including most products that foam, such as toothpastes, shampoos, cleansers, soaps, etc. In addition to the ethoxylated agents being known carcinogens, another issue is possible contamination by 1,4-Dioxane (dioxane), an unwanted by-product of the manufacturing process. Dioxane has been shown to affect the nervous system, cause death when workers are accidentally exposed to it and has caused cancer in animals when exposure is consistent and long-term. If this is in your personal care and you're using it every day or even a few times a day, you may be taking a risk with long-term exposure to known cancer-causing substances.
INSPIRATIONAL NEWS:
Some positive news came when Alf noted that if every country, along with its corporations and agricultural sectors, wanted to move towards sustainable agriculture, it would be possible to convert to 100% organic agriculture within 20 years! He said several European countries have instituted goals to change-over their agriculture to higher percentages of organic land-use. For example, he said Belgium is mandated to go 100% organic in 2 years!

Product News
Lemon Toothpaste 
The Lemon Toothpaste will now have a slightly brighter yellow colour due to a change in the supplier of our lemon oil and seasonal changes. Pictured here is the Mint Toothpaste. It also comes in Anise (licorice) flavor.
Soothing Mask
The Soothing Mask has changed colour due to a necessary change in the red clay we previously used. We now use Red Ochre clay and White clay. The new Soothing Mask colour is a dusty pink colour which is similar, but not identical to the Balancing Mask.
'Use by' Date on Tubes (Toothpaste, Exfoliant)
We often receive calls and emails asking about the 'use by' date on the toothpaste or exfoliant tubes. The expiry date exists however it is stamped into the end seal of the tube. Therefore to see it, you may need to hold it up to the light or run a pencil or pen over it.
'Use by' Date on Lip Crèmes
The ‘state’ of the crèmes (essentially a balm) mean that they should last indefinitely, therefore a 'use by' date is not applicable and is not on the package or container.

Achievements!
The company is very proud to announce that they are CARBON-NEUTRAL as of August 1,
2006!!
ONE Group has implemented wind power generation for their certified
organic manufacturing facility. They are also partnering with the Climate Neutral
Group to invest in renewable energy projects. These include "wind, solar electric, solar
thermal, micro hydro (low-impact), geothermal, ecologically sound biomass, energy crops, forest and agricultural waste and agro-processing residues and ecologically sound biogas." In addition, and just as exciting, was the decision to partner with a company that plants native trees. This goes beyond off-setting carbon output by replenishing the soil, absorbing carbon dioxide, adding oxygen to the air and creating natural habitat for wildlife. Did you know the 'peanuts' used to pack products are biodegradable? They are made from leftover corn or wheat and may be used in composting, simply 'washed' down the drain (watch them melt!) or reused. All packaging is recyclable. Moving forward, ONE Group is researching other options including using recycled and/or biodegradable and/or recyclable food-based bottles.
