Organic vs. Conventional Farming, Some Thoughts, Part 2

Last time, the focus was on the major differences between organic, sustainable agriculture vs. conventional farming and some studies showing the true environmental and health benefits of organics. One outstanding benefit to organic agriculture is its impact on reducing global warming; these are confirmed by the Fast Facts from the Rodale Institute's long-running comparison of organic and conventional cropping systems:

» If only 10,000 medium sized farms in the U.S. converted to organic production, they would store so much carbon in the soil that it would be equivalent to taking 1,174,400 cars off the road, or reducing car miles driven by 14.62 billion miles.

» Converting the U.S.'s 160 million corn and soybean acres to organic production would sequester enough carbon to satisfy 73 percent of the Kyoto targets for CO2 reduction in the U.S.

» U.S. agriculture as currently practiced emits a total of 1.5 trillion pounds of CO2 annually into the atmosphere. Converting all U.S. cropland to organic would not only wipe out agriculture's massive emission problem, but by eliminating energy-costly chemical fertilizers, it would actually give us a net increase in soil carbon of 734 billion pounds.

The Union of Concerned Scientists writes:
"Global warming is one of the most serious challenges facing us today. To protect the health and economic well-being of current and future generations, we must reduce our emissions of heat-trapping gases by using the technology, know-how, and practical solutions already at our disposal...

Sustainable agriculture practices can protect the environment and produce high-quality, safe, and affordable food. Our goal is to promote such practices while eliminating harmful “factory farming” methods and strengthening government oversight of genetically engineered food." -- www.ucsusa.org.

With the blockbuster documentary An Inconvenient Truth now in theatres, thousands of people are learning more about global warming. I thought it would be interesting to look at a component touched on in the film by Al Gore. There has been widespread praise from many that this movie is educating the public and policy makers, for all of us to make changes now in order to reverse this critical situation. The one area the movie mentions is the extraordinary impact of conventional agricultural methods. This includes croplands as highlighted by the above statistics, as well as conventional farms that raise animals for slaughter and for animal by-products. I know the following will stimulate debate and I welcome comments and questions on this or any other points in these E-NEWS bulletins.

How does factory-farming impact the animals?
In conventional animal husbandry, animals are generally kept in crowded, restrictive conditions without access to natural pastures, outside air and sunshine, etc. Unfortunately, with agribusiness practices, they are treated inhumanely -- kept in cages not even big enough to move in and when sickness sets in due to these conditions (or even before), they are treated with antibiotics, artificial hormones and other medications. They are also fed animal parts -- simply not a natural situation by any means of the imagination.

How does it impact global warming?

Beyond the animal suffering, the gases and pollution associated with confinement, digestion and waste cause major contributions to global warming. These include methane and nitrous oxide. In addition, the amount of our precious natural resources used to raise animals far exceeds the amount of food needed to feed the planet.

For example, in the DVD Eating, by Mike Anderson, he speaks about the destruction of forests to make room for crops to feed the animals, which is one cause of global warming. Conventional farming uses over half of the fresh water available on Earth to raise animals and this industry kills some 1.5 million wild animals a year. The film states that it takes 12,000 gallons of water to produce one pound of meat! That's a lot of water. If there were no subsidies, that 1 pound would cost $35! The amount of food grown for animals raised to become food or for animal by-products is astonishing: 80% of corn, 80% of grains and 95% of oats are grown to feed these animals (www.beacondvd.org). And we constantly hear that we don't have enough food to feed everyone! Keep in mind the vast majority of these crops are grown conventionally with pesticides and other synthetic chemicals, further polluting the Earth, wildlife, waterways and ultimately, all of us.

Farm Animal Reform Movement summarizes, "More than one million animals are raised and killed every hour to supply Americans with meat. This process destroys the environment...accelerating global warming and polluting the air, soil and water. Meat production also drains scarce land, water, and mineral resources." - http://www.farmusa.org/environment

And there are no guarantees the animals did not eat other animals and may have ingested tissues infected with spongiform encephalopathies. More on this topic in a future bulletin. For the curious, I highly recommend Deadly Feasts by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Rhodes (1998) as well as the section on Mad Cow at the www.organicconsumers.org site. Another good book is Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth from The Cattle Rancher Who Won't Eat Meat by Howard F. Lyman and Glen Merzer.

What does this mean for you and your family? Switching to a plant-based diet would obviously help a great deal. For those still wishing to consume animals or animal by-products, going to certified organic and humanely raised and treated animals would go a long way in solving the problems mentioned above. Reducing demand for factory farming would in turn reduce the impact that system has on global warming and environmental damage. You would also know that you are not eating all the antibiotics, artificial hormones, or sick animals associated with factory-farming. Greatly reducing intake of synthetic chemicals in the form of pesticides and other chemicals used on the food given to animals is also an added benefit. It would be healthier for you and the planet.

Education and Research in Organics and Health

This issue: Report Proves that Organic Farming is Better for Wildlife, UK
originally published October 10, 2004

A new report written by staff from English Nature and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds reviewed 76 studies and found that there is more wildlife on organic farms than on conventional farms.

The report stresses that “the intensification and expansion of modern agriculture is amongst the greatest current threats to worldwide biodiversity. Over the last quarter of the twentieth century, dramatic declines in both range and abundance of many species associated with farmland have been reported in Europe… During the next 50 years, global agricultural expansion threatens to impact worldwide biodiversity on an unprecedented scale that may rival climate change in its significance”.
The report found that:
-- There are more birds, butterflies, beetles, bats and wild flowers on organic farms than conventional farms.

-- Many of these differences apply to species known to have experienced declines in range or abundance as a consequence of agricultural intensification, a significant number of which are now the subject of direct conservation action (e.g. skylark, lapwing, greater and lesser horseshoe bat, corn buttercup).

-- Organic management provides a clear advantage over agri-environment schemes because the farm as a whole is subject to organic standards, rather than limited areas under these schemes.

-- Organic farming could play a significant role in increasing wildlife across lowland farmland in Europe.

Peter Melchett, the Soil Association's Policy Director said: "The scientific case for the wildlife benefits of organic farming is now settled and beyond doubt. People feel powerless in the face of environmental disasters like the loss of wildlife from the British countryside over the last thirty years. Everyone assumes that reversing such destruction will be painful and unpleasant. Not any more. Anyone can enjoy fresh, tasty organic food from Britain, knowing that they are also helping British birds, bees, bats, beetles and butterflies.

“The results confirm what organic farmers have seen on their farms for decades: conversion to organic means more wildlife, a greater variety of wildlife, and more of the wildlife species that have declined on non-organic farms over the last 50 years. The results fully justify the Government's decision to pay organic farmers twice as much as non-organic farmers under the new agri-environment schemes to be launched next year.”

The Soil Association welcomes the publication of this review, which confirms the findings of a Soil Association report published in May 2000 (The Biodiversity Benefits of Organic Farming). The Soil Association report reviewed all the known studies that compared the levels of wildlife on organic and conventional farms and found that overall organic farms support substantially higher levels of wildlife in lowland areas, particularly of those wildlife groups which are declining.

The paper 'Does Organic Farming Benefit Biodiversity?' has been published electronically by the journal Biological Conservation and is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2004.07.018.

For details about the Soil Association's report The Biodiversity Benefits of Organic Farming go to http://www.soilassociation.org/wildlife.

Key extracts from the EN/RSPB report (Soil Association emphasis):
p4 "During the next 50 years, global agricultural expansion threatens to impact worldwide biodiversity on an unprecedented scale that may rival climate change in its significance for the persistence of a panoply of species … A wealth of evidence now points to agricultural intensification as the principal cause of the widespread declines in European farmland bird populations..."

TAKE A LOOK HERE TO FIND OUT!

The World of Organic Agriculture, by Helga Willer and Minou Yousefi, IFOAM
April 10, 2006
"According to the survey, currently more than 31 million
hectares of farmland [over 76 million acres] are under organic management worldwide, a gain of around five million hectares in a single year. A major increase of organic land has taken place in China, where nearly three million hectares of pastoral land were recently certified.

In terms of organic land, excluding wild collection, Australia leads the pack with 12.1 million hectares, followed by China (3.5 million hectares) and Argentina (2.8 million hectares). Most of the world’s organic land is in Australia/Oceania (39%), followed by Europe (21 %), Latin America (20%), Asia (13%), North America (4 %) and Africa (3 %)."

"Regarding the share of organic farmland in comparison with the total agricultural area, Austria, Switzerland and Scandinavian countries lead the way. In Switzerland, for example, more than ten percent of the agricultural land is managed organically. The editors of the study, Minou Yussefi (SOEL) and Helga Willer (FiBL). note that “the continued increase in the organic land area over the last years is not just due to the ever greater interest in organic farming, but also a result of improved access to information and data collection each time the study is updated.”

"In 2004, the market value of organic products worldwide reached 27.8 billion US$, (23.5 billion EUR), the largest share of organic products being marketed in Europe and North America. Ongoing growth of the market and organic land area is expected for the foreseeable future, in part due to an increased support of governments and development organizations. Angela B. Caudle, IFOAM Executive Director, emphasizes “as markets for organic products continue to develop throughout the world, including in key markets outside of Europe and North America, such as Brazil and the Middle East, the benefits of organic agricultural systems on a large scale will become increasingly evident.”
